PIP is tax-free. It does not count as income, is not subject to National Insurance, and does not count towards the benefit cap. It is also unaffected by your earnings, savings or whether you work.

Uprating history

PIP rates are reviewed each year and normally change on the first Monday in April, in line with the previous September's inflation figure. This table is useful for working out backpay that spans more than one rate year.

PIP was introduced in April 2013. Rates shown are weekly amounts. Some years produced no increase, most notably 2016.

Why the history matters for backpay. If your backpay period crosses an April boundary, the DWP should apply the rate in force before April to the earlier part and the new rate afterwards. Applying a single rate across the whole period is one of the most common backpay errors — and it is usually in the DWP's favour. Our backpay calculator splits the period automatically at each rate change.

Several other benefits are uprated on the same timetable and at the same rates as PIP. If you are comparing, these are the equivalents for 2026/27:

BenefitRateWeekly
Attendance AllowanceHigher rate£114.60
Attendance AllowanceLower rate£76.70
DLA care componentHighest£114.60
DLA care componentMiddle£76.70
DLA care componentLowest£30.30
DLA mobility componentHigher£80.00
DLA mobility componentLower£30.30
Carer's AllowanceStandard£86.45

Attendance Allowance and DLA pay the same weekly amounts as the equivalent PIP components, because they share an uprating mechanism. This is convenient but coincidental — the eligibility rules are different.

What a PIP award unlocks

Motability Scheme

Available with the enhanced Mobility rate. You can exchange the mobility component for a lease on a car, wheelchair or scooter.

Blue Badge

Automatic entitlement in most circumstances with either rate of Mobility, and in some cases with Daily Living.

Higher Universal Credit

A PIP award supports a claim for the LCWRA element in Universal Credit and can exempt you from the benefit cap.

Road tax exemption

Available in some circumstances with the enhanced Mobility rate.

Disabled person's railcard

Discounted travel, and a companion can travel at the same discount on most journeys.

Passported support

Council Tax Reduction, the Warm Home Discount and various local schemes often use a PIP award as a qualifying route.

Frequently asked questions

When do PIP rates change?

Normally on the first Monday of April each year, based on the previous September's Consumer Prices Index. In 2026 the change took effect on 6 April, and rates rose by 3.8%.

How often is PIP paid?

Every four weeks, in arrears, usually straight into a bank account. Under the Special Rules for End of Life, payment is weekly instead.

Is PIP affected by my earnings or savings?

No. PIP is not means-tested and is not affected by income, savings, investments or employment. It is also paid on top of other benefits without reducing them.

Can the DWP take PIP back?

Yes, but only in specific circumstances — typically where a decision is revised on review or appeal, or where an overpayment has arisen. If you have been overpaid, the DWP must normally notify you and explain the basis before recovering it.

My award is paid at last year's rate. Is that an error?

Possibly. Uprating is supposed to be automatic. Check your most recent award notice against the current rates above. If you are being paid a previous year's amount, ring the PIP enquiry line on 0800 121 4433. Shortfalls of this kind can be recovered as arrears.

Disclaimer. Rates shown are the published DWP figures for 2026/27 and historical uprating years. This is general information, not financial advice. Always check GOV.UK for the authoritative current rates.

Think you have been underpaid?

If the DWP applied the wrong rate or the wrong start date, that shortfall is recoverable. We can check the calculation against your decision letter.
